Brake Pad Material Selection Guide for Aftermarket Buyers

Compare ceramic, low-metallic, semi-metallic, NAO and heavy-duty brake pad formulations by vehicle application, market expectations and RFQ requirements.

Start with the application, not the material name

A brake pad formulation should be selected around the vehicle, axle load, driving environment, rotor design and buyer expectations. The same material label can cover different compound recipes, so an RFQ that only says “ceramic” or “semi-metallic” is not enough for an accurate quotation.

Importers should provide the vehicle make, model, production year, chassis code and OE reference whenever possible. Destination market, expected duty cycle and any required approval should be confirmed before sampling.

How the main formulation groups differ

  • Copper-free ceramic: commonly selected when low dust, quiet operation and clean wheel appearance are priorities, including many electric and hybrid vehicle applications.
  • Low-metallic: often chosen for responsive pedal feel and heat performance in European-style passenger and light commercial applications.
  • Semi-metallic: a durability-focused option for SUVs, pickups, fleets and mixed driving conditions.
  • NAO organic: suited to comfort-oriented urban passenger vehicle applications where low harshness and rotor-friendly behavior are important.
  • Heavy-duty high-temperature: designed around commercial loads, repeated braking and demanding duty cycles.

Information to include in a brake pad RFQ

  • OE number, reference number or clear drawing
  • Vehicle make, model, year and engine or chassis information
  • Front or rear axle position
  • Target formulation and performance priorities
  • Shim, slot, chamfer, wear sensor and accessory requirements
  • Required certification or test report for the destination market
  • Packaging style, label language and private-label artwork
  • Estimated annual quantity and first-order quantity

What to verify before approving a sample

Confirm backing-plate geometry, friction-material dimensions, sensor position and accessory content against the approved reference. A useful sample review also records packaging, label accuracy and batch identification rather than checking appearance alone.

Performance claims should be supported by the supplier’s test data for the specific compound and application. Do not assume that a certificate for one product family automatically covers every part number.
